Birmingham Indian Restaurant Guide

Aside from being known for its manufacturing roots, Birmingham is well known for its heritage in the world of food and cuisine.

We picked out some Indian restaurants Birmingham has to offer, based on personal experience as well as customer reviews!

Tipu Sultan

Tipu Sultan is a North Indian restaurant with an ornate ceiling, circular booths, and purple velvet sofas.

The service at Tipu Sultan restaurant was good. We were seated and were given our menus. Overall, the food was served on time and swiftly which made our experience delightful.

The presentation of the food was very well assembled and were served in well-sized dishes. We were given a side of salad and dipping sauces for most of our food. The taste of the foods were flavourful.

The decor gave a very grand and elegant feel to the restaurant from the outside of the restaurant to the inside. The colours of gold, black and brown also contributed to this. Due to the restaurant automatically holding this grand and elegant feel, the atmosphere also felt the same and held a very relaxed and well-organised observation.

The food and price were very reasonable for such a restaurant. Our total came up to £53.20. The most expensive thing we ordered was the lamb biryani which came up to  £11.95 and the cheapest thing we ordered were the fries at £2.95. All the foods tasted great and packed with lots of flavour and not too much spice.

Al Faisals

Al Faisal’s Restaurant is an Indian restaurant on Stoney Lane, Sparkbrook, Birmingham. The restaurant seats up to 600 people with light wood flooring and an open kitchen, dishing up spicy specialities.

Upon arrival, the restaurant was very quiet as we chose to go at 2 pm, and assuming it gets much busier at later times. We were swiftly seated and given our menus. We chose to have our starters before our mains which were all very enjoyable.

For starters, we ordered: King size prawn pakoras, chicken tikka, Gol gappe, poppadom’s and chutney, and a side of fries. The portion sizes of the starters were perfect as we were able to finish most of it, leaving very little before we received our mains.

The service overall was very timely and reassuring as we were checked up on every so often to ensure we had everything and were satisfied with the food.

The presentation of the food was well presented. Most of the starter foods came with a side of salad and the portion sizes were great!

As we entered the restaurant, I saw that sections of the restaurant were parted by pillars, giving it a magnificent feel. The most evident pieces of décor that draw a customer’s immediate attention are the floral ornaments covering the ceiling and some other areas of the restaurant, with a red, white, pink and emerald green theme. The spaciousness of the restaurant adds to the grand feel.

The atmosphere of the restaurant was very calm and quiet due to the time we chose to visit, including other factors. The workers/waiters also gave off a very organised aura and overall, the atmosphere of the restaurant at the time of visiting was very relaxing.

The starter foods (listed above) tasted very flavourful and weren’t very spicy at all. The mango lassi and strawberry mojito also did not disappoint us alongside the Kashmiri pizza which was packed with lots of flavour. However, the Channa masala dish was not very appetizing and could only taste the spice of the dish despite the naan bread complimenting it well.

The price in total came up to £56.70 which was slightly over my expected amount. The cheapest item on our order was the naan bread (£1.85) and the most expensive was the Channa masala dish (£9.90).

Overall, my experience at the restaurant was delightful and would rate it a 7/10 for the atmosphere of the restaurant, the price, and the taste of the food

Tamatanga

The service at the restaurant overall seems to be upstanding. The restaurant has some mixed reviews regarding the service at the restaurant. Google reviews rate the restaurant 4 stars out of 5 and TripAdvisor, the rating is a 4.5 out of five.

The food is well presented with decent portion sizes and well decorated.

The restaurant is well decorated with vibrant colours throughout the restaurant giving a very fun and enjoyable vibe. With it being a popular restaurant, the atmosphere can give off a busy feel especially with the range of loud colours that compliment it. The atmosphere is great and vibrant and is perfect for couples and families.

The menu has so many delicious things to choose from. Many customers go to devour the lamb dishes as it is usually very beautifully cooked and melt in your mouth. The price range of the foods can vary from anywhere between £9-15 which can be expensive for some people and compared to other Indian restaurants. However, the taste, atmosphere and service may make up for it.

Overall, I would rate the restaurant an 8/10 due to the exceptional service provided, the wide range of foods to choose from and the flavours as well as the price and atmosphere of the place.

Shere Khan’s

Shere Khan’s Restaurant is a restaurant combining creativity and expertise with old age techniques of traditional cooking and offering a culinary experience to remember. The service at the restaurant was very impressive. Despite the time we decided to visit, and the busy nature of the restaurant at the time, we were seated very quickly, and the ambience and sense of the workers seemed very well organised and calm.

The presentation of the food upon arrival was very well given and arrived within 15 minutes after placing our order. We aimed to try a variety of foods such as Lamb Bhuna with the option of roti or white rice, Chicken Biryani, and a side of fries. For drinks, we ordered a jug of water and a Strawberry Mojito. The food came swiftly after our drinks were given.

The atmosphere and décor of the restaurant had a dark but well-lit feel with a range of dark red and brown tones throughout the restaurant. The picture frames gave a homely ambience and signified the culture which showed consistently throughout, including the décor.

The atmosphere in the restaurant felt very homely and welcoming. The staff constantly checked up on us including the other customers, ensuring we had everything we needed and were satisfied with the food.

The food arrived promptly after placing our order (within 15 minutes). For starters, we tried the fish tikka and the chicken tikka which was served with salad and a side sauce. As for mains we had Lamb Bhuna with the option of roti or white rice, Chicken Biryani, and a side of fries and for drinks, we ordered a jug of water and a Strawberry Mojito.

When placing our order, we were asked what level of spice we would like for the lamb and the biryani. Even though we asked for the food to be at a mild level, it still had a fair level of spice but was not an undesirable amount and was still enjoyable. All the foods tried were packed with flavours and were very warm when it was served to us. The portion sizes were enough to feed up to four people.

The total came up to £44.15, the most expensive thing we ordered being the biryani which was £10.45 and the cheapest being the fries at £2.25.

Overall, I would rate the restaurant an 8 out of 10 for the atmosphere of the restaurant, the price, timely service and the taste of food.

Dishoom Birmingham

The service at the restaurant is overall very good however the restaurant’s service charge can feel troublesome for many customers. The overall rating on Google reviews for the restaurant is 4.5 stars out of 5 which is still very good.

The food is well presented and well adorned with most foods presented with a side salad and dipping sauce to complement the dish.

The ambience of the restaurant is what customers thoroughly enjoy here. The friendly staff and homely atmosphere are what makes the customers fond of this restaurant. The restaurant has a rating of 4.5 stars out of 5 and is ranked one of the top 100 restaurants in Birmingham.

However, the price can throw many customers off. The price is slightly on the pricey side compared to the other restaurants, although other aspects of the restaurant may still make up for this.

The decor throughout the restaurant is very consistent and gives off a very elegant and well-furnished feel. With colours of emerald green and gold running throughout the restaurant, this gives off a luxurious touch to the place as well as their outdoor seating area for a more intimate touch.
