Travel like a Pro: 9 Survival tips for long bus rides

9th December 2016 | General

We are constantly on the move. Travel has become an essential part of our lives. We like everything fast – fast food, fast dating and fast entertainment, but while on the road you might feel stuck. Essentially travelling is waiting to be somewhere else. Unless you are at the wheel. Don’t you dare be distracted and waiting around at the wheel!

Bus rides are great! You have a lot of time to talk with the people around you or gaze out of the window at the landscape changing around you. But when you are travelling for more than an hour the ride can get exhausting and boring. Unless you are prepared! Being an expert of spending long hours and even days on a bus, I have gathered essential tips to make your bus ride more enjoyable, comfortable and even entertaining.

Get the best seats

If you have the opportunity, get the seats that fit you the best. Think about such things as whether there are available electric plugs on your bus (because the battery life for your electric devices is never enough) and the space for legs.

Charge before you go

You will most likely spend most of your travel time either on your phone or laptop. First of all make sure they are fully charged, as not always you can get the access to a plug, but also download some movies – this will keep you entertained, so the time on the bus will just fly by.

You will be hungry. Pack snacks!

When we were kids going on a day trip, the first thing we did as soon as we got on the bus was unwrapping the packed lunch. And wasn’t that just the best thing?Pack some light snacks that are easy to eat on the bus. Sandwiches and some fruit like apples are a really good choice in this case. The golden rule for bus rides is not to eat foods with a strong aroma or something that would drip or crumble everywhere. This will both keep the bus and yourself clean and feeling fresh.

Get comfy

For longer bus rides or travelling overnight you should make sure, you get yourself a comfy inflatable neck pillow. This is a life changer for many people. And while you are at it, why not throw in a blanket. Nothing is comfier than wrapping yourself in a blanket.

If you are planning to sleep in the bus, earplugs are a good idea, as they will block out the chatter while you wonder in your dream world.

Get lost in a book

Travelling is such a good time to catch up with your reading. You have to be careful though, because sometimes reading on a bus might leave you feeling ill. On the positive side, a book can never run out of battery.

Games and stuff

If you are travelling with friends a good idea is to bring along something that you can do together. My personal favourite is card games. It doesn’t require much space and the variety of games is endless. Plus you can play with different numbers of people!]

Headphones is a must

Getting annoyed by your neighbour or just done with talking to the annoying guy next to you? Headphones will save you from all of it. And doesn’t everything look and feel better with some smashing background music? You can even make your travel playlist, so you don’t get stuck with overplayed songs.

Refreshing cosmetics

Whenever travelling for longer periods of time your skin can feel dry and dirty. What really helps is having something with you, like face wipes that will leave your face refreshed and instantly give you more energy.

Limit your water intake

This is a tricky one. A bus can’t make pit stops every other minute, so you have to be careful with the timing and the amounts of water you consume. Even though you need to drink water not to feel dehydrated, you can’t over do it.
