Navigating Public Transport Like a Pro: Tips and Tricks

4th September 2023 | General

Navigating public transport might seem a little daunting, especially in an unfamiliar place. But if you want to make the most out of your visit to a new city or town, you need to be able to work your way around it quickly and economically. The best, most stress-free way to see all the sites and visit the local attractions is by hiring a minibus. The biggest advantage to minibus hire is that you don’t have to bother learning about what local public transport is available, or planning your journeys to get to the places you want to go. All you need to do is tell your driver and they do the rest, leaving you free to enjoy the sights.

Public transport options:

What public transport options are available to you depends on where you’re going. The most common methods of available public transport include:

  • Bus: one of the most common and the cheapest ways to get around. Most major cities and towns will have a bus route which you can use to navigate your way around. You can buy tickets that will save you money on multiple journeys and/or provide a return ticket.
  • Trains: another popular way to travel around the UK is through the train system. Trains are generally more expensive than buses, but you can get discount tickets and they are usually a much quicker way to travel.
  • Trams: trains that run on the roads alongside cars and buses, trams are common in more popular towns and cities, especially tourist attractions. Like trains, the tram is generally a quicker way to travel, but like buses, their stops are usually closer to tourist attractions.
  • Taxi’s: we’ve already discussed the benefits of hiring a mini bus, taxi’s have similar benefits. You don’t have to worry about travelling yourself, or planning a route, a taxi can collect you from wherever you are and take you wherever you need to be.
  • City bikes: if you’re travelling alone, or in an able-bodied group, and if you don’t have much luggage, you have the option of hiring a city bike so you can cycle wherever you need to get to.

Tips for using public transport:

To help you to navigate using public transport both efficiently and cost effectively, here are some tips:

  1. Understand what public transport is available to you and the fares for using these services.
  2. Research the routes you need to take.
  3. Try to find local travel passes that cover your travel for a day or even a few days, saving you money and removing the need to buy tickets for every journey you make.
  4. Look for ride share opportunities.
  5. Travel safely, stay alert when using public transport and avoid getting your phone and pass out in public.
  6. Travel light. If you’re out for the day it might be tempting to take large bag full of food and other things you might need, but it is actually better to pack lightly. Remember, you need to carry the bags around with you and find a place to store them when you’re on public transport.

To get the most out of your visit, whether you’re travelling for work or for pleasure, you need to know how you’re going to get about. Planning ahead can make your journey much smoother and much more fun.
